What is a Bauta mask?
The Bauta is the traditional full-face mask of Venice. It covers the whole face with a squared, projecting chin and no mouth opening, so the wearer can eat, drink and speak while staying covered. It was worn by Venetians of every class in the eighteenth century, usually with a black cloak and a tricorn hat.
Can you eat and drink in a Bauta mask?
Yes. The jutting lower edge of a Bauta stands clear of the mouth, which is exactly what it was designed for. You tilt your head slightly and lift a glass or fork beneath the chin without removing the mask, so it works for a seated dinner as well as a ball.
Bauta or Colombina: which should I choose?
A Bauta covers the whole face and makes a strong, anonymous statement; a Colombina is a half mask that leaves the mouth and jaw visible. Choose the Bauta for full disguise and a traditional Venetian look, and a Colombina if you want your expression to show and something lighter to wear all night.
Are Bauta masks for men or women?
Both. Historically the Bauta was worn by men and women alike because its anonymity was the point. The strong lines suit a suit, dinner jacket or cloak, and the painted and crackle finishes pair with a gown just as well, so the choice comes down to the look you want rather than who is wearing it.
